Persistence of vision.
Light is actually invisible. If it doesn’t hit our eyes directly, we can’t see it. Without a screen, a slide projection isn’t very interesting.
When quickly waved, the white rod becomes a screen. A type of optical illusion, known as “persistence of vision.” It occurs because our eyes are too slow to perceive rapidly changing images individually. Instead, we see their sequence as a film.
